  1. Member of any of the various Mongol (or
  2. Mongolian) ethnic groups of Central Asia.
  3. Mongols live in the Mongolian People's
  4. Republic, the USSR, Inner Mongolia, Tibet,
  5. and Nepal. The Mongol language belongs to the
  6. Altaic family; some groups of Mongol descent
  7. speak languages in the Sino-Tibetan family
  8. however. The Mongols are primarily pastoral
  9. nomads, herding sheep, horses, cattle, and
  10. camels. Traditionally the Mongols moved with
  11. their animals in summer to the higher
  12. pastures, returning in winter to the lower
  13. steppes. The government of the Mongolian
  14. People's Republic now encourages more
  15. sedentary forms of pastoralism, and winter
  16. quarters are often more permanent. About 60%
  17. of the Mongolian population live in
  18. felt-covered domed tents known as gers. Many
  19. Mongols are Buddhist, although the Mongolian
  20. government has been communist since 1924.
  21. During the 13th century AD, under Genghis
  22. Khan, the Mongols conquered Central Asia and
  23. attacked Eastern Europe. Kublai Khan, the
  24. grandson of Genghis Khan, was the first
  25. emperor of the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368) in
  26. China.
